Mors Syphilitica - Articles

Various debut CD reviews

“Phenomenal.”

Fright-X Magazine

“The new project by Lisa and Eric Hammer, baptized Mors Syphilitica, is once again one of these few albums you’re more than happy to spend your money for!... I think considering this band as the middle point between Christian Death and Dead Can Dance would be really too limiting. There aren’t simply gothic influences, but also black metal, classical opera, middle ages influences and atmospheres (try to imagine what would happen if the songs “Below the Baleful Star” or “The Woman Who Believed” if they were sung by a death metal singer!!!!) Eric Hammer’s guitar style is surely unique and I’m sure he has nothing in common with the bands above just as Lisa has nothing in common with all the usual gothic singers. Of course that’s gothic; that is what I think gothic is, different from new wave, dark, cold wave, post-punk, etc! The only comparison I truly feel to make is with......Requiem In White!”

-UNDER THE BLACK ROSE

“....Enchanting, mystifying and a pleasurable experience...”

Outburn

“....WHAM! Guitar, synth, and other instruments come crashing in and out comes a beautiful opera/ angelik voice from the wreckage that mezmerized me ‘til the end......The music had me ranting and raving; I have the scars to prove it!....But what really amazed me was the fact that all the artwork, producing, engineering and instruments were done by Eric!!! This man is either a real genius or has no hobbies. So get this before the man snaps!”

Blood Lust

“...Classical vocals over dark instrumentation reminiscent of the likes of Christian Death and some of the early releases from 4AD Records. Haunting!”

Apocalyptic Vision

“Multi-talented Eric Hammer and vocalist Lisa Hammer give birth to yet another incarnation of their works with Mors Syphilitica: A dark vine that slithers around and penetrates your mind. Produced and composed by Eric, the stage is set with the Hammers’ soft, but ever potent music. Lisa’s beautiful, deep yet childlike voice embraces each of the 10 tracks warmly.”

Nightshift

“... An affectionate guitar-gothic album full of pulsating mysticism!”

T. Vogel

“Fronted by gifted vocalist Lisa Hammer, the angel who carried the music of Requiem In White to fantastic heights with her woeful tones, now graces another gothic masterpiece with her unmistakeable voice...The fifth track is a song in which her voice reveals a sweetness that is almost heavenly enough to close all the wounds that her previous melancholy melodies have ripped into my heart...”

The Grimoire

“I have always been a firm believer that the best bands are not simply the few that saturate radio and MTV...I was searching for something new, original, and something that is driven strongly by the intense emotions of the respected musicians of a band...Mors Syphilitica are another talented band to back my opinion up....Lisa sings with great passion and is obviously a trained vocalist. Overall the music gives me a rather tranquil feel, while Lisa’s voice inflicts deep emotions that I never would experience from a “rock” band.“
